Training courses and examinations on "animal welfare"

Animal welfare

Our society is becoming increasingly concerned about animal welfare. Many regulations and legislative documents govern the relationship between humans and animals. This legal framework, which affects livestock, companion animals and lab animals, changes regularly.

In order to meet the requests of the European Commission, the CER Group has developed a service providing training in animal welfare.

Transport: training and professional competence examination

If you transport farm animals for commercial purposes, European legislation requires you to be in possession of a certificate of professional competence, whether you are driving or accompanying them.
By "farm animals" is meant horses and related animals, cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and poultry.
For Wallonia, the CER Group is officially recognised as the association responsible for arranging training courses and the examinations that entitle you to a certificate of professional competence. This certificate, issued by the CER Group, is unique, personal and is valid for an indefinite period. On this document are stated the animal categories for which the applicant has passed the examination.
If the certificate is lost, the CER Group can print you a duplicate.
If you would like more information on what is meant by transport for commercial purposes, please visit:

In practice:
The examination focuses on the following topics:

  • Identification and registration
  • General transport conditions
  • Administrative requirements
  • First aid in the event of an accident
  • Cleaning and disinfection
  • Welfare of the animals during transport
  • Safety of staff handling the animals
  • Physiology of the animals (needs for food, water, behaviour, etc.)
  • ...

The examination consists of a general module that every applicant is required to sit and pass. Then, the applicant can choose between several additional modules depending on the category of animal he will be transporting.
In order to prepare for the examination, the applicant can attend a training course, but this is not mandatory. This training can be organised by the CER Group, on its own initiative, or, under certain conditions, at the request of an organisation or an association.
